Alcohol Addiction
Alcohol
"Alcohol is my friend. It’s the only thing that I’ve been able to rely on in my life.
It’s always there when I need it - my bottle of courage."
Mixed in with these words is a recognition of the anger, loneliness and isolation that often fuel the alcoholic to rely on drinking in the first place. Coping with work, family, and friends becomes too difficult to do without the ’support’ deemed to be provided by the bottle. Matters are only complicated by the common presence of alcohol consumption as a facet of everyday social life for many friends and family members without a problem with alcohol.
The work to be done in therapy is to make explicit the patterns that push you towards drinking and to replace those patterns with new ones designed for a happier lifestyle. Individual therapy allows a focussed analysis of these patterns, an exploration of their origin, and the ability to explore new solutions. Group therapy allows the same advantages as individual therapy while allowing you to benefit from the experiences of others struggling with alcohol misuse. In addition, group therapy provides an environment where you can begin to learn to build healthy relationships with others that provide a new model for your life.
While our therapeutic work doesn’t follow a 12-step process, it does support those who follow the 12-step approach to maximise their experience in meetings and to provide often needed structure while they grapple with their misuse of alcohol.
